04.14.2007.. to .. 05.30.2009 Your music is: CANDLE IN THE WIND by Sir Elton John This is another very sad story of animal abuse. When is this going to STOP? How many more dogs, cats, horses, etc have to leave this earth in such a traumatic way BEFORE we ALL stand up & say "ENOUGH?" We ARE their voice. Before I start, I want to say to LELJA... THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! Lelja wrote this in a message... "Oh yes, your life was so precious little darling, I am so sorry for what happened to you." Here's the description of the PIT BULL. AMERICAN PIT BULL... Like with many modern breeds, it's impossible to be completely sure of the details of the American Pit Bull's long history. This dog is a wonderful dog, well-known for its intelligence, strength & loyalty. However, in recent years, the breed has been UNFAIRLY villianized as overly aggressive & dangerous. While the pit bull does possess a feisty & spirited character, the history of the breed reveals a much more complex tapestry of temperament & personality. We have all heard how they use this breed for dog-fighting. Let's NOT forget the Michael Vick story. This form of ENTERTAINMENT MUST BE STOPPED!!! Today, the American Pit Bull is a BELOVED animal that is used in a varitey of HELPING functions in society INCLUDING police dogs, search dogs, therapy dogs & farm dogs. Even so, negative publicity has led many cities to CONDEMN them as a community problem. This perception has been supported by the prevalence of illegal dog fighting in cities & small towns across America. In recent years, GANGS have taken a fancy to dog fighting & elevated the ownership of trained fighting dogs as a STATUS SYMBOL. The negative treatment of pit bulls in our society is UNFORTUNATE to say the least. These dogs & people CAN live harmoniously IF given the chance. Training is an IMPORTANT issue in pit bull ownership. Like many other so-called "dangerous" breeds, it's really NOT the dogs fault as to how they turn out. It's the OWNERS faulty. Many cities have labeled the dogs as dangerous, when in fact, it's some of the people that own these breeds. A dog only knows what it's taught. If one is trained to fight & kill, it's going to fight & kill. Now, here's the story of this precious soul. This precious baby had been given 2 names...MERCY & PHOENIX. PHOENIX because she ROSE FROM THE ASHES. There was already a pit bull named MERCY. She, too, had been set on fire by her owner. The name Phoenix just didn't seem to fit this baby so I started looking at AFRICAN names & I found one. So I have named this baby...AGBENYAGA. This means "LIFE IS PRECIOUS." And I believe that this name suits her because her life WAS precious. She was only 2yrs. old. She had so many years ahead of her. On Wednesday, May 27th. 2009, this precious pit was lured into an area of Baltimore by 2 juvenile thugs. She was then doused with gasoline & set on fire. One eye witness told the police that "people just stood around & laughed as this poor dog SCREAMED IN PAIN." WHY?? Why couldn't they help this baby? What's so funny about seeing ANYONE or ANYTHING on fire? What's so funny about those heartbreaking screams? On May 27th, officers with the Baltimore City Police Dept., were on regular patrol in West Baltimore, when they got to Presberry Street. When they got to this street, they saw a black cloud of smoke. This smoke was coming from the burning dog. These Officers said that "she was fully engulfed in flames." "There were people around but NOBODY was doing anything to help, so I got out of the car, took off my sweater & started hitting her to put the fire out." Officer Teal said she has NEVER heard the sound that this precious doggie was making. Thank GOD for Officer Teal & her partner. At least they tried to save her. This pit was taken to Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter for treatment. Every person who worked on this doggie has said that this is the WORST case they've seen but that this pup wanted to live. The pads of her feet were burnt off but she was still standing on them, walking to people & STILL wagging her tail. She STILL trusted people after what she had just endured. This precious soul would have been put down had it not been for a special fund at BARCS(the rescue shelter). These funds provided expensive care for this baby. Director Jennifer Mead-Brause made the following comment... "we don't understand it... we can't imagine the kind of person who can do something like this." This pup also had puncture wounds, indicating a dog fight. Police officials have said that she may have been part of a dog fighting operation. Police Commissioner Bealefeld III said there were indications that dog fighting MAY have been at the core of the case but he declined to elaborate. Precious Agbenyaga... did you have a family? Did you have a wonderful home? A warm blankie to sleep on? A comfy chair to curl up in? OR did you belong to these thugs? Were you an innocent victim of dog fighting? Did you NOT win in these fights? Were you used for bait? I have to believe that you belonged to someone. You trusted these guys. You let them get close enough to you to douse you with gasoline. Maybe you thought you were going to a fur-ever home but instead, you met a horrible, painful, excruciating injury. Here's a statement made by the wonderful MARIA DAINES. "I fully support the aim of this petition to encourage the judges in this case to enable the MAXIMUM sentence allowed by law, in prosecuting the brutes who hurt this dog & caused it's painful death. Not only must the law be toughened in crimes against INNOCENT animals but the overpopulation of pets & backyard breeding, irresponsible ownership, lack of microchipping, education & spay & neuter, goes hand in hand with minors & lawless citizens being cruel to pets. The thugs who set this poor dog alight will no doubt be hurting people soon & they need to be removed from society & rehabilitated BEFORE it's too late. There's an apathy & a complacency in our society today which is allowing these feral & wayward juveniles to literally get away with murder & it must be stopped because until cruelty to animals is taken seriously, we are ALL at risk from violent people & teens. It is a fact that many criminals start on animals & then take their anger out on human beings. We must all care because every community is affected by violence world wide & animal protection is woefully inadequate in many countries." As of today, 2 juveniles HAVE been charged with setting this pup ablaze. The local media stated that the two were twin brothers. No names have been given at this time. Here is a comment from the mother of these boys. "I know they didn't do it. I keep hearing different things around the neighborhood about the dog ran up to there. The dog... nobody said the dog was right there. So, I feel as though I know my boys didn't do it." This case sparked so much ANGER, that it generated more than $26,000 in donations to find the culprits. Not only that, but the community rallied & came forward with tips that helped the police close in on the suspects. Commissioner Bealefeld said... "we got some information in the early stages concerning the possible identity of these guys, & then, based on a review of evidence from the scene, we were able to secure another witness who put us OVER THE TOP." On May 30th. 2009, this precious fur baby was released to the rainbow bridge. Her injuries were so severe. Her kidneys could not handle the healing process & they started to shut down. Due to the kidney failure, the vets felt that she would not be able to handle the long road to recovery & that it would be best to release her of her intense pain & suffering. The workers at the shelter said she touched the hearts of so many people that came into contact with her & anyone who heard her story. They want to thank everyone who came together to try & save this amazing & courageous dog. Here's a very touching comment... "when she closed her eyes for the LAST time, I PRAY she KNEW LOVE & her pain ended. I can't stop crying & I can't write anymore." This is how much this precious pup touched the lives of many. Here's a comment about the arrest... "I am fearful that these juveniles will NOT be tried as adults & will get away with the minimum penalty." "We need to not only secure our community but we NEED to speak out for the burned pitbull who will no longer be with us to watch them get prosecuted." There are so many comments that I will add later. To Agbenyaga... YOUR LIGHT HERE ON EARTH WAS TURNED OFF BUT YOUR LIGHT IN HEAVEN WILL SHINE BRIGHTLY FOREVER. For MANY animals, the person they depend on IS the one they FEAR the most. Animals who ONLY know what it's like to be abused & neglected, they're alone & scared & they NEED our help. Some animals will NEVER know the feeling of love. They ONLY know pain & rejection. They ARE victims of cruel & thoughtless owners. PLEASE... I am BEGGING everyone to help put an END to ALL abuse, whether it's towards a defenseless animal or a human. Because of this horrendous crime, the ASPCA & the Mayor's Office will be taking on the animal cruelty issues in Baltimore. This should have been going on from the start & it shouldn't have taken the death of this precious creature to get them on the ball BUT this is a start. And I hope they can keep up the work. They need to make examples of these brothers & they need to let the City of Baltimore know that animal abuse will NOT be tolerated. Sweet girl... run fast, play hard & sleep well. You are loved by many here on earth & I know that my boys & girls at the bridge have already welcomed you into their family. They will watch over you until we can get there to shower you with the love & attention that you so deserved here on earth.
