Memories of Cadbury
Cadbury started his life living in a shelter and ended it embedded in our hearts.

Years of love and attention from Will, Jon, Lauren, Doug, Jane, Hui, Tanya, Eureka, and others served to banish the lingering fear he had from not bonding with humans when he was a puppy.

As Cadbury became secure in his world he reveled in exploring and learning. Curiosity and enthusiasm were his defining characteristics. He would often lie outside in the sun, his nose tipped upward to read the scents wafting in the breeze.

The car was Cadbury's favorite place - he loved standing with his hind feet on the backseat and his forelegs on the console. He could ride like that for hours, watching the sights and occasionally giving a lick to whoever was close at hand. When driving in the neighborhood, he barked crazily when he spotted people or dogs.

Cadbury never learned to heel. Instead, on leash, he tugged relentlessly, pulling his human toward where he wanted to go.

When Cadbury got in trouble or felt expressive, he'd make a funny grin and expose his front teeth. In his younger days he often acted out, marking furniture or chewing his own back. But this behavior disappeared because of the unconditional love from the humans who surrounded him.

For security and warmth Cadbury loved to burrow beneath a pile of blankets with only the tip of his nose sticking out. At last count, Cadbury owned nine blankets - the most of anyone in the house.

Cadbury's younger life was spent living with the boys and Coco in Dana Point. He considered Will to be his master and soulmate. Even later in life, when Doug became Cadbury's primary human, whenever Will visited, Cadbury stayed with him and wanted to sleep on his bed.

Cadbury with his long legs could fly through the air. At the Boy House in San Clemente, he could stand at the base of the five-foot wall along the park border and leap to the top.

At home he loved to play with Coco - they lived together like brothers, often sleeping back-to-back. After Coco passed away, Cadbury became a king, with a dedicated sofa in the family room, a cozy bed in the master, and a couch in dad's upstairs office.

Speaking of office, during their elder years, Cadbury and Coco accompanied Doug to work most days and snuggled together in a crate. When it was just Cadbury he became quite well-known at Arbitech, and Tayna would often bring him toys and take him for walks.

Cadbury was an athletic dog and always remained lean. Although he wasn't food obsessed, he loved meat of all types. Cheerios were his special human-food treat. Jane was his favorite cook, so it was fitting that his last meal was a bowl of her savory chicken soup.

Cadbury passed away peacefully in the early morning of February 20, 2023, having lived a full life of 15 years, one month, and five days.

Although Cadbury's heart failed him in the end, it remained filled with love for the people in his life and the world in which he lived.

May the tears shed for Cadbury be the water that keeps memories of him alive.
