Memories of Dodger
Dodger was a truly special dog and my very best friend. He never left my side since the day I picked him up from the pound over 7 years ago when I was a sophomore in high school, where it was love at first sight. I had rescued him just in time; the dog catcher had secretly delayed Dodge's euthanization for as long as possible because he knew what an amazing dog he was. As soon as Dodgeball stepped foot in our house, he went straight into my room, slid open the bifold closet door, and pulled out a tennis ball that I didn't even know existed. He always had a knack for finding anything round that would bounce, discovering countless amounts of golf balls in anyone's yard. He was an amazing catcher, and was smarter than any human I know. He learned several tricks including bringing me a Kleenex when I sneezed, bringing me my shoes, pulling back the curtains for rise and shine, and opening the refrigerator, though that didn't last more than a day...until he pulled the handle off the fridge door! He lived to make me happy. In true Dodger fashion, he selflessly waited until I was ready to accept his passing. This morning I was supposed to take him for follow-up blood work. He could have passed away at any time during the night, but he waited for me to lazily get out of bed at 10. As I got ready, I kept telling him that we were gonna go for a ride, so he stood by my door and waited for me to finish. We slowly walked out to the car, as he was having some trouble walking. He stood patiently outside while I got my car seat ready for him. Because I thought I would need to pick him up, I asked him if he wanted to get in. As if to please me one final time, he stepped inside and tried to pull himself in. I had to help him get in, and then he plopped down in the seat, head on my purse as he always did, between the two front seats. I moved his tail out of the way and gently closed the door, experiencing the sudden feeling that his long, happy life was coming to an end. I walked around the car, opened the door, and sat down in the driver's seat. If only for one fleeting second, we were both at peace; he by my side and I by his, about to go for a ride. He let out one final, loud breath of relief and then he was gone. I am eternally grateful to Dodger for changing my life and allowing me to experience true innocence and joy. I will love him until the day I die, where I pray he will be there waiting for me to come home. We just dropped him off at the pet crematorium, where he will be eternalized in the only way fitting, with his worn tennis ball.
