Memories of Jessie- the unwanted horse

The Animal Savior"...I looked at these beautiful creatures , the castoff of socitey...I saw in their eyes, love and hope, fear and betrayal...And I was angry..."God" I said, "this is terrible why don't you do something about this?"...God was silent for a moment then he spoke softly, "But I have done something, I created you."...

Columbia County, FL, 2008 - 2009

Just up the road there is a fenced yard with two horses in it. From a distance, each looks like every other horse. You are in a hurry, you want to drive on, still something makes you stop. With an uneasy feeling you approach the yard and the first what you will notice are two pairs of the saddest eyes looking at you in silent despair.

To a horse lover just a steady gaze of this amazing animal is the window of its spirit, loyalty, courage, pride, strength and its wisdom; if you listen to those big liquid eye's silent eloquence you can learn about horse's deepest emotions, its love, happiness, joy to live, its pleasure to be bonded with you in that specific spiritual way. And you too are content and thankful as you know that there is no better teacher of life lessons than a horse.
But these two pairs of eyes in the yard reveal no happiness and no joy; they reflect no such thing as love or pride, all they disclose is tiredness, unbearable sorrow and frightening pain.
And as you stand there and watch closer you want to scream, you are in shock, you pray you are dreaming the worst nightmare, you want to believe that no man would do that to another innocent living being, you even feel the need to turn and run away as this is too much for you to take in, after all you have your own personal problems and anyway you can't help these poor creatures anymore, they are obviously dying, dying in front of your eyes, and maybe there will be others who will come by and do something, they will call the police, a vet, a local animal welfare organization or they will even face the owner and demand answers one wants to hear. Besides you are too sensitive, you do love and care for animals, but dealing with animal abuse is far too much for you, you would like to help but don't know how, so you already turn your back to leave, when suddenly your own conscience awakens and reminds you that if you truly care you have to gather your inner strength and help these poor creatures the best way you can.

Meanwhile the two horses stand still as their body condition is in such a poor state they can hardly move. They stand, their big warm eyes misted with tears tied on your face, they are too weak to ask you to help them anymore, as if they knew that it was already too late. And you too know that, as they really look more like living cadavers, their backbones and ribs protruding from the skin, both indicating an advanced state of starvation, all around there are obvious signs that in their desperate attempt to feed themselves they tried to eat bark off the trees and you can imagine the terrible cramping in their stomachs causing the indescribable physical pain of slowly starving to death.

You know that horses who have had nothing to eat for a long time also suffer severe psychological trauma which is another inexplicable burden on them.
So you stay and watch for a while, feeling a sense of heart wrenching sadness overcoming your body and mind and you realize that you want to do something after all.
To prevent something like this ever happens again!!!!!
You will alert the police and a vet but most of all you will keep reminding people that while driving down the roads we should be especially aware of the fields or fenced yards and if we see horses or other animals there we will take some time and stop just to check in what condition they are. If we notice that animals are not being properly taken for we will report a neglect case to the police or alert a local welfare organization. It may take us a few minutes but at the same time it may save a life.

One of these two horses had no name. I have no information about her. One was Jessie. They have both died of starvation. They didn't die fast, but slowly, step by step, day after day, week after week. At the end they were so tired they couldn't die on their own. A vet had to help them,

Jessie's sad story

Two years ago a beautiful horse by name Spooky Moon was bought at the auction by a mother of two boys. The mother saved the mare from being slaughtered. The horse was kind and her eyes showed fear so the woman who was a horse rescuer decided to spare her and took her home. They changed her name to Jessie but the mare probably didn't mind. All she wanted was to find a loving family who would take care of her and a warm, comfortable stable. Jessie was such a sweet animal, the boys adored her and their mother never had any doubts when putting them on her back.
One day late in autumn that year the new owner noticed a small baby horse in a corral next to Jessie. She was surprised to see that during the night her mare gave birth to a girl foal, as she never suspected that she had bought Jessie pregnant. Still she welcomed new baby and named her Kelly.

Jessie was a happy horse for a while, she had a home, loving owners, two boys and a baby of her own. A perfect life for a horse, a life that each horse deserves, but unfortunately it didn't last long.
A few months later the family decided to move to another state, which meant they would have to leave Jessie behind. They say they didn't want her mare go through the stress of moving, but here they were wrong. What was awaiting Jessie was not just stress, it was the worst nightmare one can imagine.

The couple who bought Jessie seemed nice and the mare's owner trusted them they would accept the horse the same way as she had once. They paid her some money in advance, promising they would pay the rest later. The same day they took Jessie away. And the very same day the hell started for the poor mare.

The story follows as usual; there was no money and no information about Jessie. They exchanged some phone calls and when the rest of the money was mentioned the new owner told them they could take Jessie back providing they were given back the sum they had already given to the family. The family refused, they wanted to be paid and it was most probably that what sentenced Jessie to death.

And this is here where I get confused again, like in little Mac's case the owner did not react the way how most of us would probably have. We would have become worried; we would have gone there and checked on the horse, we would have done anything to make us sure all was well with her. When one really cares for their animal at least what we can do is to be reassured that animal is well provided for. I wouldn't sell my dog for a billion less for a couple of hundred dollars. We do not measure our love for animals in money for God's sake. They are not cars or houses, they are living beings, beings with feelings and heart, beings that we are responsible for, who trust us, who love us, who depend on us. I know I am always harsh in judging people when it goes for animal suffering or abuse, , but so help me God I really can't hide my anger nor tears while I am writing this. This horse went through the worst hell of all, she was dying for months, and she was trying to survive by eating her own feces or bark off the trees. And we are talking about money.

If we can't afford an animal, then don't have one, we can always care for them in another way.
Months later the first pictures of Jessie and another unnamed mare started to appear on the Internet. The pictures that take your breath away, that make you scream in agony. When the family accidentally saw them they were in shock, naturally. They did contact the police but most of their concern was expressed on the internet on different web sites. Jessie still had some chance then, if they had gone and taken her she would have been alive now, shaken and in bad condition, but she would have been alive. Now she is dead, she died hungry, alone, with no horse dignity left, her body didn't even resemble a horse anymore. Rusty's mommy told me it takes weeks and even months before a horse dies from starvation. Can you imagine, weeks, months this brave mare was fighting for life, her body slowly yielding under unbearable conditions, hunger, cold, thirst, her bones showing through its sagging skin, the excruciating pain in her stomach caused by unceasing cramps, her willingness to live slowly wearing down....

The unnamed mare went through the same. She too died, some weeks after Jessie. What was her and Jessie's last thought we can only guess. Maybe they wished they hadn't been spared from slaughter at the auction. Their death would still be inhuman, but it would be faster and with less pain.
Both mares were euthanized by a vet. The vet who knew about this, who saw the pictures, who should know the most what cavalry they went through, didn't react the way she should have. And so I blame her too.

It always saddens me when a pet or a domestic animal has no name. To me it seems like they do not exist. I wanted to give the name to the unnamed mare. I wanted to call her Hope, but have changed my mind. It just didn't seem appropriate. There was no hope for either of them. They were both unwanted.

My beautiful mares, I heard about your sad story from Maria, the popular British singer with the most wonderful voice and the heart of an angel. So please let us express our deepest apology for what had happened to you, for another human betrayal of God's most beloved creatures. What happened to you was more than inhuman, it was cruel, it was satanic, and it goes beyond our imagination. Maria and I both cried while talking about you, we both thought you deserve to be remembered. Maria and Paul are going to show your lives hadn't been wasted, they won't let you to be forgotten. Your silent cries for help were not heard while you needed us the most, but they will be your voice now, they will make sure that your agonizing plight finally reached our ears and hurt our hearts. And when the song has been finished I will put it to your memorial site here. You will never be forgotten, like with other abused animals we won't allow it, you were, are and will remain important parts of God's plan. Maybe in her song Maria will give a name to the other mare, because knowing her now, I think she won't allow her to stay anonymous. For Maria each single animal is special, unique, a part of the universe, she has spoken in the name of so many and she will speak in your names now....

I know people will be saying you are safe now in heaven, where you feel no hunger or thirst anymore, where you are loved by heavenly beings who know no evil. I couldn't agree more, but still it hurts so much to think that you experienced so little love and so much pain in your life. I wish I knew your past better, I wish I knew more about the unnamed, I wish I could find out about Jessie's baby Kelly, I searched everywhere but could get no data, but trust me Jessie, I won't give up, I will find your baby and then I will let you know.....
But what I wish the most is that there were more people like Maria and her friend Mary Alice from Cornwall. If the mares lived closer, they would be still alive now, because this lady dedicated her life to the unwanted. Jessie and her friend would have found shelter on her Jollity Farm, together with other animals saved from abuse and slaughter, they would have been able to enjoy peace and as much food as they would want and what counts most they would have been protected and loved. But God has other plans and we will never know why.
Horses have always been very special to me and I really regret for living in a city where I can't keep one. But I know a lot about horses and am more than aware what amazing animals they are. I have witnessed several times their capacities in children's behaviour healing process; I can personally prove they are natural born healers. We should never forget that it was horses who wrote our history along with the man, who fought in so many wars and who sacrified their own lives for the benefit of human race. I won't even mention what wonderful teachers they are.
Who lives with horses knows they teach us about patience, dignity and respect, but they also teach us about humility and pride. And one can not relax more than riding alone across the meadow listening to the soft sound of hoof beats and nothing can bring more peace to your heart or satisfaction to your soul.
Jessie you were both denied food and you were both denied to enjoy your freedom. Again a human monster has turned his back on you and on God.
We will never quite understand what makes a human so evil, what makes him hurt defenceless animals who want nothing but to be given some rights, the right of freedom, the right to be fed, the right to be acknowledged as living beings, the right to be loved.
Jessie and her friend are not the only victims of nowadays world we so proudly claim to be civilized. Jessie and her friend are just one example of what is going on in the country. There is a virtual stampede of horses being abandoned, starving, turned loose into the desserts and plains to die cruel and lonesome deaths. Horse rescue organizations are doing what they can, but their resources of land and money are limited due to ignorance of the government and economic crisis. So our noble four leg friends have little choice left. It looks like they too are going to pay the final price for human blindness and the ignorance of those who people vote for whose words we trust. They say after all they are just horses? Why spending money on them? So all horses are supposed to die one by one until there will be none left. Unless we all do something. We all owe it to these amazing creatures, they were by us when we needed them, now it is our turn to be there for them.

Some animals already left our planet, they have been extincted. Some are on their best way to join them. Wildlife extinction has become a popular phenomena. The last great extinction happened 60 millions years ago when a giant asteroid crashed into the Earth. But today the threat of extinction doesn't come from outer space or volcanic eruption, the next threat will be the result of a human disregarding animal world. One day animals might get tired of us and will leave this planet on their own will. And the Lord too is already growing weary of human race. And if so, then I will use Maria's words: God save our souls!
This is why it is so important that such terrifying stories like Jessie's don't take away our willingness to help animals restore their place among us, that's why it is so urgent to fight for their rights, to fight for tougher sentences for animal abusers. The clock is ticking, the time is running out, but the Earth is still spinning. For now. If we join our hands once and for all, there may still be some hope.
My beautiful Jessie, you and your mare friend are beyond any hurt now. When you entered the bridge there were two beautiful horses already waiting for you, Pat's Char and Kori's Princess. They welcomed you in the name of all our babies, they will show you the most beautiful pastures where you will be free to run with the herd of snow white horses, there you can at last display all your splendour, there you will be free to fulfill your dreams of being a wild horse again. No hunger, no cold, no pain, no fatigue anymore. And Jessie, when you run on those fresh green meadows like a shooting star I am praying a little white doggie named Mac was right there, sitting on your back, he too went through hell in his short life. Take care of him, make him smile, tell him we all love him so much and then fly with him on your silver wings against the blue sky. Nothing can stop you. No one can hurt you. You are both free now.

2/1
To Jessie and her unnamed friend:)

Jessie, I promised you I would try and find out what happened to your baby foal. I somehow succeeded in getting in touch with one of the people who posted at forum dedicated to you. The lady wants to remain anonymous and I will respect that. We talked on phone, she came here to visit you, she cried and then she told me some more details about you previous owner. She promised me to help me find your Kelly but she also said there was little hope.
Jessie, there were some people who desperately wanted to help you and your friend. They have contacted the local TV station, the sheriff's department, the national humane society and some local papers. The sheriff's answer was that you and your friend were considered property and that regarding to the law to take you out it would be considered a theft. A theft? Yes, as in the eyes of the authorities you were not a living being, but just a horse.
Your previous owner did what she thought was the best. For some reason many of her posts on a certain site were removed together with your pictures. Knowing horse's gentle soul I know that you don't blame her.She tried to help you in her own way. She realized her mistake for trusting people she didn't really know. She feels guilty now and I know that she has learnt a life lesson from her mistake. She bought another mare with a foal in your honour. We all wish her the best and may these two animals fulfill their dreams that were so cruelly denied to you.
When one day the mother of two comes through that door I know you will be right there waiting for her, you will gallop to her, you will erase the guilt she may still have, you will calm her by saying your spirit has been set free again, you will whisper into her ears that you never really blamed her and that all the fun you shared with the boys and the happy days at her home are still deeply engraved in your memories.

Go now my beautiful mare, tell your friend she too is always in my mind and that now that I have people to help me I will try to find out more about her too. May you both run free, there are so many babies that would enjoy riding you, play with them, take care of them and tell them that not all people are bad. I am getting more and more emails and messages asking how they can help, so you had not lived and suffered in vain.
