Memories of Moonbeam
| When I broke my shoulder and had to sleep sitting up on the floor, Moonbeam abandoned her usual bed in my apartment (she was free to run about) and slept every night, parked at my feet. She travelled happily with me in my car ever since I got her, learning to drink water en route where she had before been too stressed to do so at first. In hotels, she would carefully hop to the bathroom to "go" in a tiled corner rather than on the carpet if I hadn't gotten her litter box set up yet. We spent many evenings with her draped over my shoulder, after standing up on hind legs and scratching at my ankles to beg to be picked up at tv time, making quite a racket of squeaking (bunny purring) while I petted her and she licked my neck. At first, the sound of my violin freaked her out, but then it came to be that when I practiced, she would come from wherever she was and would line herself up to face me thru the doorway (I had to put screens up to keep her out of certain areas of the apartment where there were wires that she might chew). Indeed, she acted much like a dog, coming to greet me as soon as I came home. First thing in the morning, she ran with me to the bathroom to her litter box and we faced each other for a while sitting on our respective thrones (!) then it was off with me to the refrigerator to practically climb into it, she was so eager to get her daily yogurt "vitamin" pill. I still miss playing "chase the rabbit" and "chase the human" and hide and seek with her. Such a smart and playful bunny, throwing herself into the air like a ballerina in pure spring bunny joy. |
