Memories of Nellie Lou

Nellie was a such a special part of our lives. She was such a kind and gentle soul. In many mays she was what I yearn to be. Nothing bothered her. She took life as it was handed to her and made the best of it, and always seemed to be, in her own way, nudging us to do the same. We have so many memories of her and her sidekick, Sadie. There is a Springsteen song with a line that says; "They say you can't take it with you, but I think that their wrong. All I know is I woke up this morning and something big was gone." That really sums up how I think we feel. September 23, 2012 This Tuesday will mark the one year anniversary of Nellie's death. It is actually difficult to write those words. It sometimes still seems unreal that Nellie is gone. I do not think a day passes that Debbie and I do not think about her. Sometimes it is sad (like today) and other times it is with laughter. I guess that is as it should be. If she were here, she would be giving me that look that said "get over it". Because that was the way she was. She just went with the flow. We adopted Samantha in late October last year. She looked like she needed rescuing and I knew she was the right one the moment I laid eyes on her. She was being held for someone else. I called the next morning to see if they had picked her up. They had not. I told them we would be there to get her in a few hours. I always tell people that really we did not rescue Sam, she rescued us. We all, Debbie, Sadie and certainly myself had a large seemingly unfillable void. Sam is entirely different than Nellie and that seems like it is a good thing. Nellie just always seemed to think you should love her and well if you did not, well she would figure it out. Sam wants to please and she is not happy if she thinks she has made you unhappy. In some ways it is as if she knows she is trying to fill a big set of shoes. She and Sadie bring much joy to us, yet I know I nor Debbie will ever quite stop missing Nellie. Nellie, we love you and miss you.
