Memories of Our Bunnies

We've had, and have, so many bunnies in our lives all of whom lived together, so it seemed appropriate to memorialize them together.

Cadbury (1997-2009): He was the first bunny we ever owned. He was a class pet and I began taking him home on weekends so he wouldn't be lonely at the school. Little did I know that this little guy would be the one to teach us so much about what wonderful pets bunnies make. He had such a unique personality and loved exploring the house. He would toss shoes out from under beds, gallop around the upstairs when we were all at home, and even sit next to one of the cats. As we added more bunnies to our family Cadbury definitely let them know who was boss, but he eventually bonded with them. He was blessed to have had very few ailments his entire life. Even when he lost his sight at age 10, that didn't stop him from eagerly jumping into piles of hay, running around as we cleaned, and gobbling down as much food as he could find (whether it belonged to him or not), he especially loved yogurt drops. My favorite picture is of him sitting in front of a huge bowl of greens, mouth stuffed. He was a special little guy whom we will never forget.

Luckie (1999-2006): A wild bunny who bonded with the others. She loved caring for her stuffed animal babies, arranging them around the food bowl and fiercely protecting them. She was a sweet girl who always made us laugh. She would do happy bunny flops, but only when she thought no one was looking.

Chip (2001-2006): Chip and Cadbury were best buddies. Chip loved sitting on my lap, licking my face, and grooming his favorite stuffed puppy. He went through a lot of medical treatments and was a real trooper, and a fighter, he never gave up wanting to pull through. He taught us that bunnies aren't as fragile as we had first thought. Because of him we met a wonderful new vet who has been an integrel part of our rabbits' lives. Chip was a sweet soul who loved everyone.

Mugsy and Francesca(1996-2000): Although we didn't have them long, they were both sweethearts, very gentle animals. Francesca was full of energy, always bouncing around the house, then stretching out next to the back door and watching what was going on outside. Mugsy was a great boy who always loved to have his head scratched. We miss you both so much!

Andrew (1997-2002): Andrew was a beautiful angora with big brown eyes. He was not very trsutful of people when we first adopted him. But with time and patience he grew more comfortable with us as well as the other bunnies. We were lucky to have had him in our lives.

Nemo (2003-2003): Nemo was a little fireball. She would grunt whenever we had to reach in her cage to clean. She was tiny, but would bounce around on all fours like a boxer, waiting to strike our hands. She loved eating bananas and watching the other bunnies with fascination.

Duke (2002-2011): Duke was initially a little rough around the edges with the other buns, scratching at them if they came too close to his area. There were several days when he and Cadbury would somehow get into each others areas and fight. We'd come home to fur floating around everywhere, thankfully no one was ever hurt. I never thought those two would be friends. But when Chip passed away Cadbury was heartbroken, he stayed in his cage for days. When he did come out he sat near Duke, who stuck his head against the gate and nuzzled next to Cadbury. From that day on they never fought and were always sitting together. One funny memory is of Cadbury sitting in front of Duke's closed cage eating his hay, Duke was scratching and clawing at the cage. Cadbury sat contently, out of reach, calmy eating. Last year Duke was diagnosed with a chest tumor, he underwent radiation treatments. The vets were amazed, the tumor shrunk and never grew back. He was a strong bunny, a fighter, right up until the end. He had the most beautiful blue eyes and everyone always commented on them.
