We just moved into this big house in the country. We were married for 1 year and we decided that what we needed was a puppy for our first wedding anniversary. Little did I know when I first saw you at 6 weeks old our lives would change forever. You were this little bundle of fur that dug himself in a little hole away from his brothers and sisters. I picked you up and you snuggled in my arms and that was it. Love at first sight. You crawled into my heart and stayed there. We came back 1 week later and brought you home on a long car ride on Memorial Day weekend. You were the most beautiful puppy we have ever seen with the biggest brown eyes and you grew up to be the most handsome boy! We have been through many ups and downs. When I got laid off and got my severance check the first thing we did was fence in the back yard for you. The first time I let you run loose you just stood there and looked at me. Then you just ran around in circles you were so happy! That was one of the best days in my life. When I had to go to Boston for my brain surgery. I was real scared and nervous. I would hug you and I would feel so much better. The first thing I put in my suitcase was your picture so that would be the first thing I saw when I woke up in my room. We had to put you in a kennel and it broke our hearts but we couldn't find anyone to take care of you. Grandma was too elderly and grandpa was in heaven. I was there a couple of days and Grandma told daddy "you get Winston out of that kennel right now, you need him and he needs you". He went and picked you up and I heard you and dad had quite the "party" eating spaghetti!! I ended up staying much longer because of complications, but when I got home you were there waiting for me and you laid by my side while I was recovering. You are the best dog ever!! That was just the way you were. Always there for us. You loved us no matter what. Everyone loved you and you loved everyone. Even your vet. And we all know how much you loved him. You would bark wildly when we would get near his office. You would come bounding through his doors barking and wagging your tail to let everyone know you have arrived. You would be so proud to know he has your picture on his wall in his office. I remember after 9/11 we were packing up supplies to bring to the drop off center and you went with daddy. Ever since that day every time you saw and heard a big airplane you barked at it as if to say, "get away from our house!" You were something else bubs. What I will miss the most is you lying beside me as I plant flowers in the garden when spring arrives. You used to wag your tail and run in the back yard to help me plant them! Then the first thing you would do is sniff them. You loved them so much. But don't worry; I am planting a memorial garden for you where your ashes are buried in the back near the birdbath, which you loved so much. You were on so many medications though the years, high blood pressure, thyroid, and pills for your skin. But you always took your meds and always gave me a high five after you took them. When you died, it was the worst day of my life. My life will never be the same without you by my side. It all happened so fast. I never thought when I took you that Friday that would be your last visit to your vet. You were so brave going up the handicap ramp; tail still wagging, happy to see everyone. You had surgery to take out your spleen and you came through it. The next day, daddy and I came to see you and you were hurting so bad, but when you saw us you sat up at full attention, so happy to see us. Then you just collapsed and laid down. Daddy said that the biggest compliment he has ever had and he will never forget it. The Dr. came back that evening and took you out and walked you around and you seemed okay. Then when he came back in the morning you were so sick. He called me and said it wasn't good and he ran out to get blood for he was going to do emergency surgery to see what was the matter. We were supposed to meet him when he came back so we could hold you and tell how much we love you and say our goodbyes in case you were on your way to Rainbow Bridge. When he got back, you were already there. He did an autopsy and found you also had heart failure and the test for your spleen came back and it was cancer. Baby, mommy and daddy were only 1/2 hour too late. I wish you waited for us but maybe you wanted to spare us? I will never get over losing you. You were my soul mate. The love of my life. You will be in my heart and soul forever. Daddy and I will never out do our first anniversary present. You were an angel sent from God. Now we have our own guardian angel in heaven. Thank you so much for giving us the honor of having you in our lives for 12 1/2 years. You will never be replaced. We miss you so much. Rest, play with all your new friends and wait for us!
