My best friend joined our home when I was 5 years old. She was my Christmas present, and I loved her so much. She was always there beside me. Even though she was a little mutt, she had a heart of gold, and was always protecting me. She used to sleep in my Daddy's fleece-lined slipper. Her mommy was a poodle and her daddy was a jack russel terrier. When I was 11 my dad was in the pasture behind our house burning some sticks. It was a summer day. I was in the front yard playing. I didn't know Princess was back there, we had never let her back there, because the fence wasn't sturdy. All of a sudden I heard Princess let out a shrill cry. I ran to the backyard and my dad was carrying a whimpering Princess in his arms. While my dad was back there, a cottonmouth snake started striking at him and he didn't have any protection from it. Princess came running and fought with the snake...she was bitten on her neck. My dad laid her on a towel and put her food and water close to her. I didn't leave her side all day, but her neck kept swelling. "Will she be okay, Daddy?" I asked, "Shouldn't we take her to the vet?" My dad said, "We don't have the money for the vet. She'll be fine. In a few days she'll be dancing around the yard again." I still stayed with her, stroking her curly mess of fur and talking to her. She stopped crying, and just looked at me with love in her eyes, and gave me a kiss when she could. I went to sleep that night and when I woke up, I ran downstairs to the kitchen where my mother and father were looking at a book about snakes. I asked, "Is Princess okay?" My dad said, "Princess went to Heaven last night. The swelling made her suffocate." At first I was angry at him for telling me that she was going to be okay, and that she had to die in such a horrible way. Then, I just collapsed on the couch and cried. It's been almost 5 years since that days and I still miss my friend and cry sometimes. But I know that she is watching over me. Who says guardian angels can't have 4 legs?!? I can't wait to hold her again.
