ONLY A DOG
By Mary E. Cody
A house too quiet
No padding of paws
Happy barking on my return
Clink of metal collar links
Against the water bowl
Old dog snores in the night
Soft brown eyes
That never judged
Pure heart
Incapable of deceit
How I mourn the loss
Of something so special
Not human
Something more
Than a human can
Ever be
Some would say
He was only a dog
I would say
If only a dog
