Zack came to us via e-mail. He was found in a locked 2x2 room, blind, with feces caked all over the back of him, urine and old food bins everywhere. He had never had a bath, been to a vet, never received vaccinations, water was scarce and his feedings were irregular. His entire rear end was swollen with an elarged prostate and from diarrhea from the aweful foods thrown to him on tins and plates. He was covered in fleas and we found later, he was highly allergic to fleas. He would cry when one bit him. It was aweful. We don't know how he became blind and took him to 3 specialists who told us he would never see. But we took him on any way. Zack had never had a chance, we thought. His former owners never taught him to go outside, they only threw paper down for him. He was found by authorities after his owner had passed away. Immediately, we took him to the vet and became our "NO BLUE CROSS CARD" dog. Our other dog of 12 years didn't know what to make of him but in these last months, she became very vigilant over him as she knew his was sick.
Over time, we "fixed him up", taught him how to eat from our hands, go outside and even play. The first time he showed "play" to us, my daughter ran in the room in smiling tears. "He can play Mom. Zack knows how to play". It is just like watching a child take its' first steps or speak its' first word. He was our special snuggle, hand warming buddy. He just loved being held. Being a terrier mix and also blind, he was especially smart. Honestly, the smartest dog I've owned in my 39 years.
We love and miss our Zack man who lost his fight against a mast cell tumor. We hope to see him on the other side one day and maybe hear the words, "Thanks for giving me a good life after all."
