Smokey, aka Opie, racing name CMBBoombabieopie - crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 2/10/2005.
Smokey hadn't experienced the best of life before being adopted by Dave Greeno (d.greeno@comcast.net), but you would have never known it by his smile & continual tail wag. Smokey was a retired racing greyhound that had a mediocre racing career of almost 2 years. He was then brought into the Colorado Greyhound Adoption program & adopted. Unfortunately, his first home turned out to be less than nice to him. His owner turned him loose on Mt. Evans at Eagle Lake in June of 2003, where he roamed on his own for almost a week. Luckily, someone at Eagle Lake Lodge found him & took him in. Down to 63#, he was returned to CGA and into my care. He was a wonderful foster dog & we fell in love with him immediately. After researching his pedigree, we discovered he was a cousin to one of our own greyhounds. Smokey lived with us for almost 2 months, where we nursed him back to health & with chicken & rice dinners, back to a normal weight of 80#. He was then adopted by another gentleman who kept him for almost a month, then relinquished him - as he had severe separation anxiety & had destroyed the house on a couple of separate occasions. We immediately took Smokey back into our fold & told everyone that he was more than welcome to stay with us until the right forever home was found for him. During a Meet & Greet almost a month prior, Dave Greeno had seen Smokey & fell in love with him. When they heard he had been relinquished, they immediately called me. Smokey & I made the drive to Dave's house, where he was adopted immediately and lived the rest of his days. Dave loved Smokey so much, and gave him the life of a King - which Smokey deserved. Dave never went anywhere that Smokey wasn't with him. They were inseparable. Smokey also encouraged Dave to become a Foster Parent to other greyhounds, helping them learn about life outside of the kennel.
Smokey was a beautiful, loving, kind, proud, and yes - arrogant boy. He deserved to be arrogant. Why not? He had the best forever home any greyhound could ask for. Two couches for his choosing, as well as 2 "brothers," Sandy & Shadow - whom Dave adopted during the next year. More love & attention than he could absorb, & a dedicated greyhound owner that thought of him as his child.
Smokey crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 2/10/2005, at the age of 5. We still don't know what took our beloved boy from us. We only know that we miss him terribly. Yes, I was only his Foster "Mom", but Smokey was special and will always be my boy too.
Smokey, you will forever be in our hearts. We love you & miss you.
