Taco was a 18# miniature Schnauzer who lived with us in Sedona, Arizona
for twelve years. She protected her yard from incursions by other animals,
including javalina, coyotes, neighborhood dogs, rabbits, and especially cats.
Twice while out walking we came face to face with a full-gown mountain lion,
which she saw as just a rather big cat, which she hated. She chased both off.
She also chased off a large dog that jumped on her, faced down a large
neighbor rottweiller several times, barked at tarantulas, growled at ravens,
chased lizards, and dug huge pits in the lawn trying to catch gophers.
She had a psychic connection to us, and we swear that she could read our
minds. One time when I took her out with her leash for her morning walk, my
wife stayed home and took a shower, as she had to go to work early. When
we were about a quarter mile away from home, Taco suddenly stopped,
looked back down the street, and practically dragged me back home, without
stopping to sniff anything, which was totally unlike her, as she loved her walks
more than anything else. I knew something was not right. We soon got
home and I took her off the leash as we came inside the fence. She ran up
the stairs, flew through the dog door and ran straight to the bathroom
shower, where my wife was having a blood sugar drop, and was moments
away from fainting in the shower. I ran inside following her, and found her at
the shower door, looking worried. I ran to the refridgerator to grab some
cheese slices for my wife. Taco, who loved cheese and always begged in the
kitchen, never left the bathroom. I gave some cheese to my wife, and a little
reward to Taco. She loved us so much, and after twelve years developed
cancer, and after fighting it for a year, we finally had to put her to sleep. I
was the hardest day for us, and we still grieve for her 8 months later. I know
we will see her again someday. Taco was a loving dog and could read people
very well. We miss her and will love her forever.
