Waiting with Grandpa
by Shelly Lewis
Waiting with Grandpa... What pure and delightful Christmas joy Five playful puppies, more fun than any toy Each one named by the end of their birth day All but one to cheer another family Precious Tacoma to stay and join our pack Playing and pulling sleds were waiting ahead Grandpa had other plans for our sweet bouncy pup With Greg visiting his grave that Christmas day Grandpa must have asked God for a special and patient companion God heard Grandpas Christmas request for a beautiful puppy And that afternoon His will to provide was stronger than my effort to save One would never expect what was to happen next So happy to eat, so happy to play The combination proved fatal that Christmas day Alone with him when it happened, I did all I could Calling Gregs phone it rang by my ear Just a quick visit, there was no need for the phone It just reinforced that I was all on my own Greg came home to a very sad sight Tacoma gone but still in my arms My heart not wanting to give up the fight My head was spinning, my heart breaking His mom would come in and only find four With him cradled so tender I sat on the floor Over and over I wondered WHY? No answer gave me any comfort I didnt think I would ever stop crying Who would take an innocent puppy on Christmas day? The answer came in a surprising way from a husband who never dreams But there it was so very clear to him Tacoma and Grandpa together And finally the elusive comfort So welcomed at last Our puppy, now his puppy The realization that Tacoma is with Grandpa And, not only are they both looking over us But they are also waiting, waiting together For the rest of us to join them.
