My Gift of Magic
by Janet Romagna
My Gift of Magic: Today is Ash Wednesday. Today I found out I have to put my wonderful black lab, Magic, to sleep. He was a fun, loving, wonderfully patient dog. When a new puppy came into the house (which happened at least 3 times) he practically took over the raising. He taught them how to go outside to go to the bathroom and how to play ball. They crawled all over him and that was o.k. He taught them manners. He carried 2 balls in his mouth all the time. Today Magic has a degenerative spinal disease and although he is not in pain he will die within one year and his quality of life is gone. Soon he will not be able to get up at all. The happiness is gone from his eyes. Even the vet said he was unhappy and frustrated. So to a catholic (me) Lent is a time of sacrifice. Today my Lenten obligation is fulfilled. I am giving Magic to Jesus. He will love it up there. For the rest of lent I will do a good deed for someone every day. Through all this sacrifice, God gave me a reward. I was standing outside the doctors office talking to my husband on the cell phone. Through all of this I quit smoking 10 days ago. A woman come out the door and lit up a cigarette. The smell was gross. So gross, I walked to my car and got in while on the phone. It didnt hit me until I started writing this that that was my reward. I couldnt stand the smell. I am never going to smoke again. I know Im not supposed to, but I say that with confidence. So believe in miracles, I just got mine.
