Spudgie
by Carolyn Schulze
Our hearts brake today , as we had to say farewell to a part of our family. His name was Spud,as a young puppy he was thrown out of a vehicle while driving down the Highway,a young girl driving home fr University saw this and stopped. Miraculously there were minor injuries that soon healed, this girl cared for "Spud" until he was two. Due to relocation he had to be given away. By some miracle he came into our family that day.My husband took our 2 yr old daughter to see this dog, they fell in love with him and brought him home. Spud was incredible, he loved all of us and being in the country. About a month ago we noticed he looked very sad and had off days were he wouldn't want to "go " for his morning run, then the next day he would be back to his old self again. Three days ago he stopped eating but was still drinking water(the vet said this was a good sign) After a trip to the vet , we had to wait for bloodwork results keeping Spud as comfortable as we could. Today at 3:30pm the results came back..... Almost every organ had stopped working in his body , But his HEART and lungs were still very strong. There was no medicine, no opperation and no hope that his condition would change. He had been in one spot for a day and a half, barely able to wag his tail, but today he walked out of his house and all the way to the front step, then he ate(which was his last meal) had a big drink and laid down at the door. My Husband and I had decided that he deserved to go with dignity and not suffer needlessly, that appointment was at 4:00pm. We have three children Ten(same age as Spud) and a five yr, and our 4yr ,Through all the tears and hearbreak they said farewell to Spud. Then he was taken to find peace, my husband and I wept as we knew this was best. My Daughter was going to tell her friends at school that he was gone, as we live very close to the elementary school. All the children walking to and from school knew Spud as they always would have a wagging tail to send them on their way . He loved eveyone and the whole community knew him and will miss his big brown eyes smiling at them when they came to say hi.
