Memories of Gus
Some of you have read in the past about our dog Gus. He was diagnosed three years ago with lymphoma. At two and a half years into the three he developed mast cells. We did a surgery that was hopefully going to be curative but it was in vain.

The past few weeks saw him slow down dramatically although he always ate his food and followed my wife around. Her "red shadow" for lack of a better term.

Yesterday he had had enough and was falling apart after many great days and no side effects from his chemo. We believe it was mast cells internally or an infection. His breathing became labored and he wasn't happy anymore. We knew it was time.

At the vet, as he took his last breath we felt an overwhelming sense of relief that he was no longer in pain. We told him good bye, that we loved him and missed him and we will see him again. We are going to have to get use to feeding only two dogs now. We know we will eventually be able to move on but the road ahead is going to be a bumpy one to say the least.

We will miss his goofy ass so much. He was the funniest of dogs. He never took himself seriously (ever), was afraid of sheep (allergic to wool I suppose) and always had four toys in his mouth (overachiever!). He embraced life to the fullest. Even at eleven years he had travelled more than most people only dream about.

We are asking that everyone who reads these few paragraphs to give a moment of pause in these crazy times and just hug your dog. Hold them tightly. The last gesture you may be able to offer is only a kiss on the head and a scratch on the back of the ear where the fur is oh so soft.
