The story of the Mastiff...this dog was used by the Romans as both a war-dog & a fighting dog. The British liked the Mastiff because of its size. In our time, the mastiff is basically a FAMILY dog. This breed is also a fantastic watchdog. The home is its fortress & he knows how to convince strangers that they DON'T belong there. The mastiff will normally not attack an intruder UNLESS it's self-defense... but then again, very few people have been brave or stupid enough to find out whether the dog is serious when he stands tall in front of you with a low bass sound coming from his throat.

The mastiff is a natural born talent when it comes to tasks that require great strength & muscle power.

The personality is very relaxed & normally harmless...one who LOVES his family. He's very dependent on being close to his owners & appreciates & DEMANDS being cuddled. The average mastiff is friendly & patient with children.

The mastiff doesn't have any particular interest in hunting... this means he won't run away when you let him loose in a forest. He does love the water even though he isn't a typical swimmer. He likes to wade but can also swim to fetch whatever the owner throws in the water.

Many people think of mastiffs as slow & clumsy...NOT SO. Some are quite fast & can outrun any human being. And then there are some who are slow & lazy. Not wanting to do anything more than they really have to do.

I am guessing that that is what Regina was like. However, she didn't trust people very much.

Regina's story is so heartbreaking. I just can't understand what goes through the minds of people.

Regina was at the PROTECTORS DE ANIMALES DE LA RIBERA "RIBERCAN"..this is located in Spain.

HERE IS REGINA'S STORY:

Regina was a mastiff/mix. She was 5 yrs. old. People have said she was a CHARMER... easily frightened. She would allow them to touch her & she even gave little kisses to the rescue people. The volunteers at the shelter had just begun to gain Regina's trust.

What happens next is so very hard for me to understand. The rescue was broken into one night. Three dogs were frightened away from the facility when their quarters were badly damaged. Two of the dogs did reappear at the rescue & the third dog did come back a few days later. BUT poor Regina...she never had a chance. She was PETRIFIED & too timid to fight back. What they did to her...all I can say is THEY should have the same thing done to them. And I am NOT that kind of person. Regina's legs were tied with wire...they abused her sexually & then, as if that weren't enough, she was hit in the head until she did not have the strength to fight back. She left for the bridge, lying in a pool of blood. HOW COULD ANYONE DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS??? And why??

The people at the rescue were devastated. They said this act was SO cruel & such a terrible act of violence. They don't understand why this happened. They did say that this is NOT the first time that people have broken into shelters/rescues & it WON'T be the last.

The rescue people FEAR for the lives of not only the animals in their rescue but for their OWN lives. "We need all the aid possible to be evacuating our shelter since the cruel act of savagery to Regina, lest these people may return to repeat another offense against our rescue animals & perhaps it COULD be much worse." The workers have decided that they WON'T leave the sanctuary. They WILL stay to protect their rescues. They are just hoping that they will get the protection that they have asked for.

Here is a statement from MARIA DAINES. "Today, my heart has been broken. I read the story of a poor rescue dog in Valencia, Spain, who was sexually abused & brutally murdered when her shelter was attacked by vandals. The minute I read Regina's story & looked at the photographs of her body, I KNEW I had to start a campaign to gain justice for her death & encourage Spanish authorities to implement animal welfare law & punish animal abusers."

This is just ANOTHER example of WHY we MUST STOP all abuse. To think of what this poor girl went through is just heartbreaking.

REGINA...you are at the most beautiful place there is to be. NEVER to be harmed again. You have the warmth of the sun... the beauty of the rainbows... the friendship of many fur babies... the gentle touch of the ANGELS. You are free to run, play & have a good time with all of your new friends. You will never go hungry... never go thirsty.

So pretty girl...run fast, play hard & sleep well.

Again, I want to thank everyone who has come to visit this special, little girl. I know that ALL she EVER wanted was a loving, caring home. People who would give her loving belly rubs, take her on nice, long walks & give her ALL the smooches she wanted.
