Memories of Remington
Remington was the most silly, lovable, friendly big galoot. Always playful, always smiling, always in a good mood. We were so lucky to have had him as our friend and companion for almost 12 years (he was five days shy of his 12th birthday). We know that often Swissies are gone several years before that, so we also know how blessed we were to have been able to share even more time with him.

He was a champion at stare contests. Many times I had to give up or hope that he would somehow get distracted, because he could easily stare for 10 minutes without blinking! Our other dog would look away in a few seconds, but not Remi! He thought that was a fun contest!

Remi would eat treats without chewing them, which made me wonder if he even realized they were treats. But, if you tried to put a pill in them, somehow he knew it right away and would spit them out.

When he was little, he would bark at anything he didn't recognize. If we were on a walk on a trail and came to a sign, he would bark at the sign. He would bark at fire hydrants, he would bark at wagons, he would bark at mailboxes. We always knew he would protect us from the silliest of things.

Remi was terrible at catching a treat thrown to him. He would usually open his mouth after the treat hit him on the nose. Our little dog is pretty smart and he would sit next to Remi when we tossed treats because he knew Remi would miss and he could clean up the treat. Remi maybe didn't have the best mouth/eye coordination, but that was just one of the things that made him so lovable.

In his prime, he was quite an athlete. He had such strong shoulders and could pull a car if he wanted to. Imagine taking him for a walk on a leash (at least until we finally were able to train him...)! He was a great jumper and would jump the four steps from the ground up to the deck with ease.

He was quite curious, too, and would disappear into the woods just following his nose. He usually could care less about the squirrel or rabbit near him, and was more interested in finding a new tree on which to mark his territory. He also loved truck rides and would go from window to window in the back seat to make sure he got to see everything. He just loved life.

Remi would roll on his back, almost in slow motion. It was comical to watch him with a bone in his mouth, on his back, swaying back and forth super slowly. The bone would fall out of his mouth and he'd stop, trying to figure out if it was worth getting up to get the bone, or just to stay on his back. Usually he'd just lay there, upside down.

Remington loved to bunch up area rugs and lay on them in the hallway. He would go into the bathroom and pull out a bathmat, bunch it up, and use it for a pillow in the hallway. He'd go under the Christmas tree, grab the tree skirt, and pull it out for a pillow. He'd pull a blanket off the couch and lay on it. Any if there was any article of clothing left on the floor like a sock or a shoe, he'd lay on it.

He had this odd way of turning around and sitting on your feet if you were standing. He would rarely sit facing you, but always had to sit on your feet. We would mess with him by constantly moving in a circle behind him so he would have to keep moving, just to be able to keep sitting on your feet.

One really funny thing about Remi was he was always sneezing. Sometimes 5, 6, 7, or more times in a row, The best was when you could really see one building up until it seemed to come from his toes! I've never seen a dog sneeze as often or as hard as Remi did!

Another funny thing Remi would do was he would scratch an itch with his back leg - while standing up! I had never seen another dog scratch and itch while standing, they would always sit. And he never fell down or wobbled, he had great balance!

Swissies are known for their "Baroos" where they let out a loud sort of bark that sounds just like the word is pronounced. Remi would baroo when he was excited or when we weren't getting his food fast enough. Out of the blue would come a great big baroo and take you by surprise. What a goof.
