Sugarfoot came into my life in the spring of 2003. He was adopted by my best girl Donna, and right from the start, I knew he and I would be best buds. Sugarfoot was a white cat with puffy orange clouds across his body, a real looker! Everyone in the neighborhood who saw him commented on how beautiful he was. Sugarfoot knew this, too :) A month after his adoption, we decided he needed a feline friend, and that's when we adopted Simon. It took a while for them to get past their initial "who the heck is this" stage, but once they did, they were the best of buds. They hunted together in the brush behind my townhouse, many times late into the evening and sometimes even at night, knowing that I would have my flashlight out looking for them if they weren't back by nine (this was a little game they played; they liked me looking for them). The fished the small pond of water to the other side of my backyard, using their paws as fishing poles. It was hilarious watching them. They walked the same path so many times in the backyard, they left a physical path in the grass--a perfect diagonal line. When inside, they tussled like two Roman gladiators--very rough, but very loving. When I had shoulder surgery in 2004, Sugarfoot never left my side. He wasn't a lap cat, but he slept on my chest then, until I was better. He was so loyal, so loving, and I miss him dearly. When he was six months old, he was diagnosed with a heart condition (cardiomyopathy), but with medicine and an endless supply of love, he lived another five years. Sugarfoot taught me it's not how long you love someone, but how fiercely, and my bud, I love you fiercely still. I'll always remember the hurricane we toughed out together with Simon, the greetings you gave me when I got home from work, the way you toyed with the fish in the fish tank, how you rolled on the deck when I was brushing you, how you seemed to even smile at times. You were a special guy, and we had a special friendship, and I will remember you always with the greatest fondness and love. Take care my bud. I will see you again! JR |
