Sam loved to watch the goldfinches outside the sliding glass door of our new home. One day when I had the blinds pulled down to about twelve inches off the floor, Sam decided to act on his impulses. He attacked the window, not realizing (or not thinking?) that he wouldn't be able to get through the glass to the birds beyond. In the process, he tore a hole in the brand new blinds. Poor kid, I felt sorry for him because not only did he not get the dinner he was expecting, he walked away with hurt pride and a few bruises from smacking into that window so hard. The hole in the blinds remained as a status symbol for Sam though; as he put it, "At least I tried." Now the hole in the blinds will remain as a cherished memory for his adopted brother and me; we will never forget our Sammy. We miss him every minute of every day, but I bet he's back to eating like a pig again and chasing after those birds and bugs he so much loved to chase. Wink that cute l'il wink of yours on those bright sunny days, Sam. We'll smile right back at ya! |
