It's not often the first cat you adopt is your soulmate, but 'twas the case with Tater Tot. My family often joked that instead of him being my Emotional Support Animal, I was his. Tater was my shadow from day one. He loved sleeping next to me on my pillow or getting under the covers in the winter. He spent every work-from-home day the last three years right next to me--a joy my clients and I both shared. He was a classic orange male kitty, always up to something silly. He liked to climb to the top of the refrigerator, scale the window ledges of my loft apartment, and jump from one side of the closet to the other. He would scream to be held or scream when he realized he was the only one still in the living room at night. All it took was one, "Taaaater!" and he'd come running to see you. He was such a cuddly boy and his purrs could heal the incurable. I'd give anything to have more time with him. I never thought our time would be cut so short, but I'm forever grateful for the six years I got to be his mommy. I gave him the best life I could and in return, he never let me feel alone or unloved. He helped me navigate a pandemic, my late 20s, and a time when all my friends got married and I felt "behind" in life. His sister, Sushi, and I will miss him beyond belief but to have loved him was a gift and we will cherish that forever. I am thankful to have her to keep me going and to spoil with my undivided love and attention. Always hug your fur babies tight because no day is promised. |
