Memories of Zaire
When you were a baby I told you in a video the week I brought you home in Miami, that five years from then you'd be embarrassed of yourself for being such a goof. Then we lived a lifetime together...

You, carrying the dead squirrels that had met an untimely fate in Idaho when you were young; and I had to squirt you with a hose to get you to drop them. And you made a girl scream when she saw what you had...

Our obedience classes, the time you stole someone else's training treats and left them with nothing...

Your ears, the metamorphous they went through!

How fast you were, the fastest dog in the dog park....it was so beautiful and I was so proud...

the day you broke your tie and caught the deer fawn, but we watched her grow after that...

how you loved elk and deer scat and horse manure!

the evening you and Nairobi wrangled with a porcupine and you both lost...

your '"baroos" and chortles, my basenji girl...
And your high fives and butt-thumping to get my attention... You always have my attention my sweet girl...

all the times we shared a peanut butter sandwich on the mountain peaks---
camping by Mt Hood, the time we almost had to sleep in our car...

camping in Central Oregon, you curled up tight on the sandy dirt glowing in the light of the campfire. And then we hiked for hours in the tall trees exploring together in the morning...

Camping on the coast, the night we almost asphyxiated because I didn't put the campfire out all the way...

Our hundreds of walks by our lake in Oregon...

when you lay with me by Kenya's grave and we cried together...

How we slept outside together because you and I are kindred spirits... our spirit soars from nature and the sun...

how you loved cheese from Mom's house and seeing her...

how it felt to have your body lie against mine, the security and the warmth...

the way you looked at me... your amber almond eyes, so wild and primitive;
the way I looked at you...

the feel of your fur under my hands, your scent. the feel of your fur on my cheek, and your kisses...

You were the glue that held us all together- your pack. Zaire, you made us whole...You are my everything. You know our pack needs me. But I always needed you.

I will always be with you and you with me. We are soulmates. I've been in love with you, my angel from the day we met. 'I have loved you for a thousand years, and I will love you for a thousand more.'

Zaire, Nairobi, Kenya, Rwanda, Kali, Sierra & Mombasa - Always and forever.
