Our souls entwined
by Lindsay
In 1988 my family adopted a pure breed wiemeramer from Strays Halfway House. Somebody had thrown her out, and was rescued. We named her Dagmar. She was not the prettiest dog in the world, but her personality made up for it.We had a hard time training her, and at times were ready to give up. We stuck with it and she became the best dog anyone could ever ask for. She loved to lay on our deck in the summer, and chase squirrels. If one of us was using the house she would try to bite the stream of water. I'll never forget how she used to hate the snow. We had to fight her to get her outside in the winter. She followed my mother around constantly, and occasionally trip her. Dagmar would wait outside the bathroom door for us. As her health dwindled, her mind stayed keen. She learned a new trick in the last 6 months she was with us. She would pretend to have to go outside, then back away from the door as soon as it was opened, looking towards her box of treats. After she recieved her treats, she'd really have to go to the bathroom. She'd then want another treat when she came inside. Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks. On April 28th 1999 she collapsed on the stairs, unable to walk any longer. Dagmar just couldn't fight anymore. We decided that we didn't want her suffering. She was put to sleep at around 10:30p.m. I kept my hand on her heart, waiting until I heard the last beat fade. I felt as if my on heart had stopped. She looked so peaceful, as everyone gave her a hug and a kiss goodbye. She will always be in my heart, and mind, through the years our souls entwined. Dagmar is remembered by Lindsay, Marabeth, Victor, Shirley, Dennis, Chip, Amy, Sooty(Brother),Petula(Sister),Hannibal(brother),Duke, Germany, Peanutbutter, Cooper, and Cheyanne<(Her Cousins).
