I always wanted a pet, but I did not want a big dog, a cat, or a fish. I wanted a RAT. I bugged my parents for months on end, but my mother objected to the idea of, and I quote, "a hairless tailed, trash eater, baby bitter, plague spreader, so and so...". So, I decided to stop pestering them about the rat. Christmas and my birthday were comming up and I decided that since my parents weren't going to buy one for me, I'd buy my own.
Well, at Christmas time I found a rather large present under the tree, with my name on it. From the day I found that big present till Christmas, I kept thinking about what it might be.
Finaly, Christmas day came and the first present I opened was the large gift. It was a glass cage, with a water bottle, food dish and a plastic rat inside. I laughed at the silly joke my dad set up for me, but inside I was heartbroken.
Within a few days I celebrated my 13th birthday (1998). I got enought money to buy a rat. I was about to walk out the door to the pet shop, when my dad called my name.
I went into his bed room where I found my mom and dad sitting on their bed. He told me to check his sock drawer. I opened the drawer and found a small box. I opened the box and found my rat. She was less than a few inches long, white with a black arrow on her back, and she gave a little squeak. That is how she got her name.
She was a great friend, she was there for me when i found out my boyfriend was cheating on me, she was always there for me.
Well, that Febuary I got another rat, to keep Squeakers company. her name is DEE DEE.
Squeakers started to get sick in September 2000. We took her to the vet and they said there was nothing we could do but keep her warm. Soon after we went to the vet, Squeakers stopped eating hard foods and started to lose weight. I had to feed her canned cat food. She gained her weight back and looked health agian. But it didn't last long. She started to lose weight agian and she threw up the cat food. A few nights later, while I was a my first Homecomming dance on October 21, 2000, Squeakers passed away. I got home and found her in her cage, not moving. We buried her that night beside the mailbox, I was still in my Homecomming dress.
I really miss her, but I still have DEE DEE and I got a new rat. Her name is SABLE. She looks just like Squeakers, but she will never replace Squeaker's place in my heart.
