Eekie was only about 1 1/2 weeks old when he came to live with me. He was found abandoned by his real kitty mommy under the porch of my friend's aunt's home.
Merte was in her late sixties and had asked Lisa to go and check and feed their dog Shelly and the little kitten they had found, while away from home for a few days.
I went with Lisa and after feeding and walking Shelly, we headed out to the barn to feed the kitten. When we got out there, all we could hear is a little baby crying because he was hungry. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the baby as he was just a little ball of black fluff. Lisa picked him up and tried to feed him but didn't have any luck. I had her give him to me and as I held the baby in my left hand, I placed the bottle near its mouth. It took a minute but finally it started to nurse from the bottle.
I asked Lisa if she thought Merte would mind if I took the baby home to help feed it until weaned. She didn't see a problem, so I took the baby home.
After getting home, my Mom and I watched as I put the baby on the rug to get some exercise. It was funny to see the baby move as I knew he had been abandoned for some reason. Well watching him crawl along the floor, we noticed that his front feet turned under, causing him to topple over after every step. What a site!
I took the baby every where with me. He stayed in a small pet carrier covered up with his little blankets. I kept fresh formula available in case he got hungry. One day while with another friend, I went out to the car to check and found movement under the blanket. So I picked him up in his blanket and took his bottle into the doctor's office with me. I warmed the bottle under the hot water and then sat down to feed him. At this time I still hadn't thought of a name. While sitting there waiting for Joanne to come back out into the waiting, people could see that I was feeding something but couldn't figure out just what it was. Even the nurses came over to see. Everyone that saw him thought he was so cute. So did I, and after that I fell in love with him and he became a part of my life.
Since he didn't have his baby teeth in yet, and never meowed, but only squeeked, I decided to name him Eek. That's just what his meow sounded like.
Eekie slept with me every night from the time he could get out of his box that I kept beside my waterbed. He'd curl up in my arms and there he'd be all night. It never failed, when "mommy" went to bed, so did Eekie.
He went camping with me and loved to be outside on his leash. He'd even ride in the car as long as he was in his carrier. I tried to take him one time without the carrier and that was the last as he screamed the entire time. As long as the carrier was there, even if the door was open, he'd be in there, watching the scenery go by. He wanted the security of "mommy's" arms or his carrier while out.
He was nicknamed "Half a Cat" by my Mom as he was smaller than the other cats that I had at the time. She may have called him names, at times, but she loved him just the same.
Eekie crossed over to Rainbow Bridge on July 24, 2002 from kidney failure. He is now there with Grandma and Grandpa and the other animals that we had while he was alive.
He was my little baby boy and I thought of his as my real child. I miss him and have his last photo, taken the day he left me, over my bed so his picture is the last thing I see when I go to bed each night and the first thing I see when I wake up.
Mommy misses you baby boy and will be with you again someday when I come to Rainbow Bridge. Then we will cross it together and be with the others and God in a wonderful, peaceful place forever.
Until then my little boy, take care of Grandma, Grandpa, and BE GOOD to Susie.
