Our Dog Bailey

Bailey is a beautiful Cocker Spaniel, a beloved family pet. In her 12th year (2001) she had her first really serious illness. Her diagnosis was Auto Immune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA). The illness had an acute onset and really took us by surprise. The doctor gave her a 25% chance of recovering because her blood count was so low when we brought her in. He presrcibed a high dose of Prednisone and we took her home to cuddle and love and pray for her recovery. What the Vet refers to as a small miracle we call "the power of love"...Bailey responded to the TLC that we lavished on her and the steroids (of course)and has made a remarkable recovery. Although the Prednisone wasn't without it's complications Bailey has managed to sustain all that, regain her blood supply and is healthy and happy. We are certainly thrilled that she decided to fight for her life and stay with us a bit longer. She will be 14 this August. I guess basically what I wanted to share with this story is that even though you may think it's the end when your dog is diagnosed with AIAH (or any life threatening illness) they just might surprise you and recover. I definitely believe that the extra love and attention we gave Bailey made the difference. I believe she thought we had replaced her with our new puppy and wouldn't miss her if she left us. But she was WRONG! Once she realized that we would be devasted if she left she decided to fight for survival. We are truly grateful :)
