Goodbye Sweet Boy
by Bob and Donna Fillman
We just lost our best friend, someone as close to a son as we could have. Ten years after my wife introduced him to me Kirby was fine one day and the victim of internal bleeding caused by liver cancer the next. Kirby was a big guy who loved life as much as anyone I have known. Someone who gave love so openly and freely. As big a guy as he was, he was as gentle as a lamb. Kirby was my rock through times of unemployment, a mugging, and quietly helped me through a dozen trials and tribulations. Most of all he helped us enjoy life. Kirby was a 102-pound mixture of beautiful golden retriever and as my wife liked to say, Shetland pony. The pain is palpable. The reality is so difficult to grasp today. Yesterday he was frolicking at the local school playground, today we had to say goodbye to him as he lay on an operating table. We are beside ourselves. We have lost our son. The most well-behaved and mannered boy a couple could ask for. Throughout his life Kirby dealt with bone spurs, displasia and a congenital eye problem with the stoic attitude only a dog could show. We will miss his wagging tail and squeals of love when we came home from work. The house will be an eerie quiet without his jingling collar, almost too painful to bear. It is a wonder we humans put up with this kind of pain knowing it is sure to come with a dogs short life span. But when we are able to stand back, we know it has all been worth it. The sheer joy and unquestioning love and loyalty are something only a dog owner can know. But for now, the pain is like a burning dagger and we selfishly wish we still had him here even knowing he would have suffered to live on. I hope he knows what a difference he has made in our lives. Kirbydog we love you and we will miss you always.
