tribute to a little rat with a big personality
by Amber Franzen
I was searching pet stores for the perfect non furry animal for me (I have bad allergies). I looked at snakes but was undecided. We went to the last pet store and sitting alone in a tank was the cutest thing I ever saw: it was a hairless rat. I had never seen one before and wanted to hold her but I didn't know if rats bit or were tame. I was suprised at how friendly she was when I held her and it took about 3 minutes to decide this was my perfect pet. I took her home and she was my close buddy always sitting on the futon with me. We watched tv together, shared food, and snuggled. Whenever I walked into the kitchen where her cage was she would stare at me until I acknowledged her. She loved attention, but more than that she loved food. On one occasion her head ended up in my mouth because she wanted to grab my m&ms I had just attempted to eat. She would snatch food out of my hand when I offered it to her in such a rude manner it was funny. She loved when I gave her the last spoonful of oatmeal in the morning. It ended up flying all over the cage because she tried grabbing it all. Her lack of manners never failed to makew me laugh. At Christmas time Babydoll and her buddy and cagemate Sasha tried opening presents under the tree. My husband and I took them to the petstore and got pictures of them with Santa. They got little stockings filled with treats hanging above their cage. My friends laughed at the way we caterd to my girls but to me they were very much like my children. She will always be in my heart.
