Two of God's Angels
by Jennifer Frye
I thank God every day for sending me two of His angels. The first was Snoopy, a beagle who was the same age as me. We grew up together, and were completely inseparable. When she reached the age of 14, she started slowing down a bit, and I remember my father telling me that she wasn't going to live forever. My mother and I decided to get a puppy to keep Snoopy company, and little did we know what a blessing that would be. Shamrock, a nine month old basset hound, was truly sent by God. They were the closest of friends. All of a sudden, Snoopy was running, jumping, and playing with toys again. Shamrock gave her a few years of life back, and we were so grateful. Snoopy's health was amazingly strong, and she never had to see the vet except for routine shots and check-ups. That is, until the second week of April, 1993. All of a sudden, Snoopy seemed to be away from reality, just sitting and staring, and not responding to us much. I pretended that she was fine, maybe thinking it would go away. Finally, however, enough was enough. On Friday, April 9, 1993, at the age of 17, Snoopy could no longer stand up by herself, and hardly recognized my mother. My mother called the vet to have her euthanized, and I held my dear Snoopy the entire time until the vet had me place her on the examining table. My mother started to leave, but I said I wanted to stay with my Snoopy. The injection was quick, and my mother told Snoopy how much we loved her. Snoopy opened her eyes one last time and met my eyes. Without a sound, she told me everything was fine and that she loved me and our special memories. And without words, she thanked me for having the strength to stay with her until the bitter end, and for having the strength to let her go. I thank God for pretending not to notice that one of His angels is still with me, as a ten-year-old basset hound that fills many hearts with joy. She has kissed away so many tears, caused so much laughter, given so much, and asked for so little in return. Thank you, God, for sending me two precious angels. I pray that other people know the love and loyalty that dogs bring into this world.
