It was a cold March day back in 1991. We had lost our beloved cat K.K., of kidney failure on February 14th. My husband and I were very depressed and decided to take a ride to a nearby "no kill animal shelter." We were not planning to get another cat, as we felt it would be some kind of disrespect to K.K. As we walked through and looked at the kind souls in their cages. Our hearts were filled with a different kind of saddness. We wished we could take them all home with us. My husband and I stopped and looked at one cat. She was a big female, a solid grey color. Tears filled my eyes as she looked too much like our K.K. Then my husband spotted a friendly white and grey cat. A face so sweet and seemed to be smiling at us. We then found out that M & M was a male, we thought he was a female as he had a beautiful femine face. My husband liked him right away. So did I, I fell in love. But our hearts were still heavy from the death of K.K. We decided to go home and sleep on it. But from the time we left the place all we could talk about was M & M.
The very next morning, March 10th I called the place first thing in the morning. " Is M & M still there? Did anyone adopt him?" I was so happy to hear that he was still there. My husband and I got into our car and raced there to adopt him ourselves. M & M was adopted once before and for some reason the people brought him back. My husband and I both agreed that it was those peoples loss and our gain. M & M was 14 months old and just so wonderful. We signed the adoption papers and a woman smiling called us up to the front desk and said " M & M is going home." Tears filled our eyes as we felt so lucky to have this wonderful beautiful cat.
Many years have gone and many wonderful memories were made. From walking on the beach with M & M on a leash to him traveling in a car, sitting like the perfect little traveler. He loved life and also other cats as a year after we adopted him we adopted another wonderful female cat named Emma. He took to her like she was a littermate. Then 4 years after Emma came into our lives we adopted another young male of 6 months old named Jeffrey. M & M once again took to this young fellow and made him his best buddy. A year and a half after Jeff was adopted, my husband and I had our son. Again M & M played the fatherly role and loved our son from the beginning. Never frightened of the baby crying or the pulling of the fur. M & M let our son do about almost anything to him, without a hiss or raised paw. A truly gentle and loving cat.
And now poor M & M` is gone. We all miss him so. We will never forget our dear M & M nor K.K. either. Each cat is different and each cat brings his own love and friendship. Ones we will never forget. Someday we will see our beloved animals and what a wonderfully happy day that will be, to be all together as one.
