I looked you in the eyes
I promised you I'd be there
When the time came to say
Good-Bye
You looked back at me
Not understanding, but caring
That sadness was radiating from me
You licked my face
And galloped away, your tail bouncing
Over your shoulder
We swam at the beach
Watching the sail boats be whipped
By the wind
You hated the water
But you came because I did
Why they made you go
I don't know
Was it that you killed
Too many rabbits
Or protected me from
The grouchey jogger who ran by
One day I came home and grabbed
My roller blades
I got your leash and went to get you
But you weren't there
You weren't in the kennel
Or up at grandmas
You also weren't at the beach
Mom and dad came home
I asked them
I looked at them in horror
You were never coming back
I cried, I still cry now
Even at the thought of you
Seven years, you were here that long
God would have taken you
Probably soon
But sometimes I wish
He'd taken me too
