Edsel the Ant Slayer
by Jenny Hayward
I have never been good at poetry, nor story writing but wanted to share with everybody a special little puppy who passed away Friday afternoon due to a blood infection. My boyfriend and I purchased two weeks ago the cutest Dachshund in the world, 10 week old Edsel. At first, I didn't want Edsel, I have always been partial to fluffy dogs and Edsel was anything but fluffy. She was awkward, couldn't quite coordinate her long body and big ears with the rest of her while attempting to walk around, yet I fell instantly in love. Edsel was a snuggler, not content unless she was on mommy or daddy's lap! I miss her sighing when she couldn't find that "comfortable spot" on daddy's knee. Though Edsel was only three pounds, she thought of herself as invincible. I remember when Rob took her out on a walk. She saw an ant crossing her path, she leaped up in the air and pounced upon it, gobbled it up and looked to daddy for praise! Edsel's eyes said it all- It was eyes like that that coined the term "puppy dog eyes". Edsel had the biggest, brownest eyes and would use them to her advantage. Edsel had an amazing light in her eyes, she loved her parents and she loved the world that she was just beginning to experience. Yet, all of that came to an end last week when Edsel became sick. Her eyes glazed over and she had great difficutly breathing. Edsel died two days later in the vet's office. Though mommy was there with her to comfort her in her last few minutes, our little sausage of love passed on. I miss her so much and try to convince myself that there is a heaven and a loving God who will take good care of my baby.
