Patches, has it really been so many years since you left me? I remember you...tail squirming, tongue lolling
Knowing your name from the first moment I uttered the word
After seeing you in your coat of many colours. I remember you...
proud and prancing, strong and vibrant chasing the wind as it lifted a Frisbee far into the air. Eyes glistening with accomplishment as your muscles rippled with every loping stride back to drop it gently into my hand again. I remember you...as you leaned against my legs quivering, eyes and ears at attention, hair bristled along your spine
protecting me from the monster who threatened me...and gently licked away my tears of desperation and grief. I remember you...your eyes looking into mine with the vision of he who has seen so much, and wished he had not, yet also with love and concern for you understood how I loved you and needed you. I remember you...curled up with me on the ragged lineoleum floor next to a drafty wood heater, trying desperately to stay warm...to stay quiet..to stay alive for my sake..
and looking into my eyes telling me as I cried that it was time to go.
I remember you...in days of Autumn as chipmunks scurry and leaves blow
And yet another reminder of you is brought squirming into the world.
I remember you...in the quiet solitude of my heart. Patches. My friend. I remember you.
