My Dog Reenie
by Barbara Kennedy
Reenie was sitting in a cage with her sibling, a very bouncy, yelpy puppy. Reenie was quiet. When we looked at both of them, Reenie won our hearts. She licked us each once, and than cocked her head. It was as if she was saying," When are we going home?". It was love at first sight all the way around. We got her 6/4/84. In August, she got very sivk, with a high fever. I took her to the animal medical center,in nyc, where I live.I was so distraught that the Vet. who was taking care of her had to tell me to let go of her, so he could examine her! My husband got there,as I was in total hysteria. I loved her so much! It turned out that she had a bad reaction to her distemper shot, but was fine. Reenie was the kind of dog you only had to tell something to once. The first time I said "sit", and pressed on her hindquarters, she sat. She sat for the rest of her life! She learned everything yu wanted to in one try.She must have been a water dog in a previous life, because she loved to swim. One time, my husband was on a softball team that played near a lake. Reenie and I were his fan club. Everytime the ball went into the lake, Reenie swam for it. The only problem was she wanted to keep it! Reenie was a beautiful German Shepherd. She never was involved in polce work, nor did she save anyone in a some kind of disaster. She made every day of my life happier, and more meaningful. When she was twelve, she developed an inoperable tumor in her abdomin. We had to put her to sleep to save her from the pain and suffering that would have followed. It was the very worst day of my life! I was afraid to see her die, but when they were getting ready to do the procedure, she got up from where she was laying to try to follow me out. I stayed with her as she crossed over.My husband stayed with her too. She was so important to us. Her little Westie brother, Caesar, mourned for her also. She took such good care of him, and was so gentle with this little dog who was 70 pounds lighter. Reenie, you were one of a kind. When that bridge is crossed, and we are all reunited again, I will be happy for all eternity. You live in our hearts, Your human parents, Barbara and Randy
