Scarta's Rainbow
among the skies of colour
and the lands of green
the lost one finds her
way home
behind her the sun sets
before her
the skies darken the land
rain sweeps from
one end of the horizon
to the other and in it's
path forms a rainbow
a shimmering bridge
of unnamed colours and
unwritten beauties
she begins to ascend
and with little effort
is lifted to the crest
of the arc
where she is able to look
down and find love
where she is able to look up
and find home
where she is able to
remember the past
embrace the now and fly
into the future

Scarta began her battle with a mysterious illness that left her weak. Her person tried and tried to find a vet to treat her, but much to her dismay, all of the vets in her area told her they did not treat hamsters or other small animals. Distraught and helpless, all she could do was give Scarta the love she needed in this time of illness. A few days went by, and Scarta seemed to improve, regaining some energy and eating a little more. We thought that maybe Scarta was in the clear, but unfortunately her health took a turn for the worst. The beautiful little hamster weakened once again and developed symptoms of severe illness. Close to death, she hung on and fought until the last hour. Finally finding a vet who would treat a hamster, Scarta's person took a cab to a faraway place and cried in another room while the vet sent the poor brave little hamster to the rainbow bridge. Her body still warm she was held close to the heart on the subway ride home, tears falling for her unchecked. She was buried with all the things she loved, including a slice of apple, her favorite treat. Brave Scarta now frolicks on the rainbow bridge with her sister, Argenta, who had also died. She awaits the time she can see the person again who loved her so dearly. This poem is a tribute to Scarta and to the girl who loved her so. I have never met Scarta, but through the written word I came to know her and her person, and shed many tears for both of them when I learned of her departure. This poem was written to ease the pain of Scarta's loved one. Goodbye Scarta!
