Subject: Another Butter
I was showing a friend the Rainbow Bridge site and came across your tribute to
BUTTER. I was moved, as I always am by stories of helper dogs.
I logged into your tribute because many moons ago there was another dog named
Butter. She was a Border Collie who lived in our student communal house in
Greeley, Co. One of the women had rescued her from an abusive situation, so
she was very shy, especially of men, feet, and men with feet. She was
originally named Buttefly but the guys quickly shortened that to 'Butter'.
Through gentle affection and bacon bits I eventually gained her trust so that
she was my constant companion through my last summer (of '73) there. Several
years later I visited the couple who ended up with Butter. She at first barked
when she saw me coming up the road, but when she heard my old greeting of "Hi
sweet Butter.." she wagged and smiled at me and we had a quite wet reunion.
Later she proudly showed me her herd of ducks. She remains a favorite in the
stories of 'Dogs I Have Known . . '.
My sympathies for your loss. Your Butter was surely a happy dog because she
served a purposeful existance with a people friend right up to her leaving.
I hope you find another friend and helper at the appropriate time. Butter will
remain "never absent from your heart.."
Yours truly,
