A Tribute to Minnie
by R Niland
When we met along that country road, years ago We were both lost spirits in need of care. Since then, we have become an indominable team--- We've spent hours travelling, to nowhere, on magnificent sunny days And, we've braved floods, nearly sweeping us away. You've stayed with me when we've not had enough to eat, and, slept by my side while there was not nearly enough heat. We've been on long horseback rides, over mountains and, dales And, we've worked the fields, storing for winter, bale by bale. With all my shortcomings, you've never made me feel second rate And, you've not complained when my job required that I come home late. You don't care that my truck and, farm are old and, run down Because you know I'm more content here, than living in town. As life will have it, at some point, our story will end But, in this journey, I've found my one true friend. You have given me trust, companionship and, unconditional love And, whether you know it or not, an occaisional shove. No, you're not a Husband or, a devoted lover, you're my Dog And I'm forever grateful that I traveled down that country road.
