"Wigglebutt"
by Sue Plavney
Saturday afternoon, I lay in my bed for a nap and along side me was Heather, one of my dear Corgi girls. Well truly, Heather was my daughter's. She named her and certainly loved her as I did. But this day, she lay beside me taking a snooze for herself. She awoke me barking to tell me she wanted to go outside. We live on almost six acres and in her nine years with us she always stayed in the back field or on the side of the house. I made my way to the door with Heather and Gretel ahead of me, telling me to hurry. I let them out and periodically checked to see if they were back yet. I saw Gretel up on the hill near the barn and because they were always together, I assumed Heather was with her. They were out about 10 minutes when I returned to the front door to find Gretel waiting to come in. But Heather was not with her. I called "Heather, come, Heather come", but there was no response. I quickly put on my coat and went outside. As I started down the driveway I saw a car stopped in the road and in the car's headlights I could see my dear Heather laying in the road. I will never know why,on this day, she went to the road. Was she chasing one of the woodsy critters living in our area, or was she just exploring? All I do know is that we napped together on this her last day with us, and then, she was gone. I will never see her "wigglebutt" again. I miss her terribly. Gretel misses her. My daughter misses her "Heather Marie" and we feel so empty. Gretel is 13 now and we will watch over her so very closely. Heather, my sweet Heather, is at the Rainbow Bridge... someday we will all be together again.
