Scout
by Emily Tadlock
Scout was a mix Welsh Corgi and Cocker Spaniel. I got her from a breeder that was not exactly happy about the accidental pregnancy of her Welsh. I knew the minute she looked at me that she was mine. Her body was Welsh, her head a Cocker, and her temperment gentle. She was a light during a dark time in my life. I had split with my boyfriend of two years, and I needed her as much as she needed me. I tried hard to train her, but it was difficult getting her to understand. However, I never lost my patience. She had the ability to sing (howl) a song only a mother could love. Scout was a joy to play with and hold. I remember her final day very vividly. It was one evening and my roommate had gone outside with Scout. Apparantly, she had gotten loose from him and darted toward a busy street. Scout was hit and killed instantly. When my roommate came to tell me the news I screamed and cried, begging God to bring her back. She was given a memorial service that night and buried in the backyard of my family home. Scout was surrounded by five friends that loved her as much as I did. We read a wonderful passage from "The Little Prince"that told us Scout would be shining down from heaven at us. I think of her often and wonder what it would be like to still have her. It hurts less and less everyday. I have since gotten another dog, but there will never be another Scout. I miss you little girl, and mommy loves you.
