Chesters Last Walk
by Lisa Wallace
Thin and weak, you raise your eyes to meet mine It is now undeniable that it's only a matter or time Years of unconditional love, soon to be over No more lazy days in the sun, no more walks through the clover. It's as cold outside as the feeling within Your earthly journey almost over, your spiritual one about to begin Favorite blanket, beloved white seal, now passed on to your little friend As she tries to get your attention, she doesn't understand you've unfairly reached your end Memories of fun, moments to be cherished, all ending before we thought Your illness far too advanced, a cure couldn't be bought You had such quiet dignity, the best friend to be found No longer will you come running when you hear chips making that crunching sound Knowing how happy it makes you, realizing that there's no more time to lose Your excitement hides your pain as you watch me put on my shoes Seeing your leash, hearing the jingle of your collar makes your funny little tail wag so fast I wonder as we go out the door, if you sense this is to be your last There is snow on the ground but you don't mind at all Just to be outside where the sounds of life are around you is enough to make you walk tall We headed back home after you had one more smell of your favorite spots Then I held you tight and hugged your neck and told you I loved you alot Too frail for one more jump, loving arms lift you into your bed I watch as you're driven away forever Filled with sorrow and guilt, wishing more could have been said It's been some time now that it's been over, but the pain still makes it hard to talk I will always remember your moment of happiness my sweet Chester, when I took you for that one, final last walk
