My first walk with Diego and my border collie mix, Etta, was quite an event. Diego, being young and intent, eagerly joined us for the 1.2? mile cruise through our neighborhood at what turned out to be the fastest pace that Etta and I had ever taken - and Etta always pulled me along. Whew - I felt all my muscles from the waist down afterwards.
Etta was a barker - particularly in her younger days - and Diego would let everyone know, with his barking, when he felt alone. One day, knowing that a neighbors had previously complained, I crossed the street and invited Diego back to our house - barking ceased. Etta was good-sized at 60 lbs., Diego towered over her and could easily step over her while she was standing, It wasn't until I brought Diego into our house that I fully appreciated his size - our house suddenly became very small. While Etta lay on her cushion on the floor staring at Diego, he sat calmly erect on the couch next to me with his head considerable above mine.
