His last day here was his favorite kind - a beautiful, warm spring day. We sat on the patio just enjoying the sun for over two hours that afternoon - Bernie in my lap, his little brother Chewie at my feet. A little later, he went for a walk with his Daddy and his brother. So the last things he got to do were his favorite things to do. He battled the cancer so bravely for over 15 months and won; the cancer was in remission. But he couldn't win the war against the liver damage. He was so brave, such a fighter. Stubborn, demanding, tempermental - he never had a doubt who was the alpha in our house - him. We will miss him forever. ----June 5, 2007: I still miss you my little one, but Bernie Tu is here now to keep me company. I don't know whether you're whispering in his ear or he really is you come back, but he sits just like you always did, with that right back foot sticking out between his front legs and the left back leg stretched out like it's balancing him. And sometimes when he looks at me, I swear it's you sitting there. I have always thought it ironic that I lost you on March 8 and one year later, he was born on March 4. He makes it easier to be without you, but I still look at your pictures across from my desk, as I'm doing tonight, and my heart aches in that special little spot that will always be yours and yours alone. I love you, Bernie. You will always be number one. |
