I first saw Lucky, a one-year old pit bull mix, at the Orange County Shelter in September 2008, while I was looking for a dog to adopt. I chose her (or did she choose me?) because not only did she come to the fence of her cage to be petted like many other shelter dogs, she also started licking my hand. That closed the deal. Smart self-marketing, Lucky! Little did I know that she would lick everyone for many years to come, whether they consented or not. Lucky was the most people-friendly dog I have ever met. She was friendly to everyone, whether to a toddler or an octogenarian, a businessman wearing a suit or a homeless person at a street corner - they were all equally being licked! She even let kids ride on her back - they fell off quickly, though. At the same time, she was very loyal - when we visited friends, they always knew if I was in the bathroom because Lucky would stand guard at the door. She was not an angel - her prey drive was very strong. But she will be sorely missed - she was kind, energetic, smart, a pleasure to be with. Cancer got the better of her - sometimes, bad things happen to good dogs. The way she handled it was remarkable - never whining, crying, complaining, just slowly fading. You are at peace now, Lucky - thank you for your companionship during all those years. |
