Memories of Mars
Mars (official name Omari) was adopted by us from a local pet store where he had been rescued by his guardian angel, Simone, in 2007. She adopted him out of the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter just in the nick of time as he had been red-tagged and faced imminent death. We were immediately captivated by his magnificent ears and beautiful, soulful eyes. He was welcomed into our family by Scout, Shira and later on, Louie and Elle and immediately became the Captain of the house. He enjoyed years of special hikes, lots of treats and just having space to relax and feel safe. He was utterly brave and protective, one morning chasing 3 coyotes from our front yard through the neighborhood before John was able to catch up to him.

He was incredibly intelligent with an uncanny ability to respond to both verbal and non-verbal language. On our first meeting with him when he was in the cage at the Pet Store, John said very softly to him "Let's see how smart you are, can you go over and get your toy?" He took one sideways glance at John, got out of his bed, walked to the other side of the cage, picked up his little stuffed cow toy and laid back down in his bed looking directly at John. This was the first of many amazing experiences we shared during our life with Mars.

We will miss Mars very much and feel so privileged to have shared our life with him for almost a decade. Godspeed, Little Man, we will always love you.

Please also visit Louie Marlowe-Carr, Scout and Shira.
