Memories of Marshall
On June 12th at 9:00 pm1 we lost our "little boy" Marshall. His bravery made the decision for us. His heart stopped while my hand was feeling every beat until the last. He was in his safest and most comfortable place, home. He was diagnosed June 6th and up until his very last few moments, he was truly himself. He hid any pain or discomfort so well that you wouldn't think the lab results were from the same pup. Still being a baby, he fought without ever losing a battle. He didn't slow down, he chased every ball, he bit every stick and he never missed a meal.
He was only 2 and a half years old and battling stage 5 Lymphoma. He did this secretly with gallant. A gentle giant that broke the laws and reputations of mastiff breeds by showing nothing but pure love to every one he met. He stole their hearts and imprinted on them even during a brief encounter. He was the type of dog that didn't need extensive training because he was naturally polite and didn't want to hurt anything, not even his friend frog or duck.

I always referred to him as my little boy, ironically because of his curious, trusting and faithful demeanor and because he was, for all intents and purposes, my child.

He lived a short life but he gave us the rare opportunity to experience pure love without discrimination or conditions. Playing in the mud, or rain doesn't hurt. Laying in the grass to simply take in the scents of spring air. Or, always giving a quick kiss as he'd pass by someone he loved for the 100th time that day. Dogs can teach us all valuable lessons that we need to learn from.

Marshy created a new space in my heart and soul that allowed me to be a better man in every way. While I was teaching him, he was teaching me. Michelle and I will be forever grateful that we had him in our lives and we will always keep his lessons in mind.
