Fluffy (Bunny)
by Angela .........................................
We had our pet rabbit, Fluffy (whom we normally called Bunny) for a little over eight years. She was the first rabbit that my son and I owned. My mother had brought home Bunny as a gift for my son (who is very timid about certain pets). He instantly took a liking to her and I thought, what am I suppose to do with a rabbit?
She was a very lovable lop eared rabbit who I became very attached to myself. She would push around her soft volleyball in circles while she hopped and kind of squeeked, which meant she was happy. Bunny used to also lie down by the wood stove during the winter. Her cage was in between the wood stove and the back door and when I'd pick her up and felt her ears were cold, I'd warm up her ears with my hands and hold her for a few minutes to get her warmed up before she'd go off to play and run around. Most of the time I'd sit on the floor and she'd run over to me and I'd pet her until she wanted to go off again. Many times she helped me get over any sadness I felt or anger by just letting me hold her while she lid and cuddled into my arms. I could sit for nearly an hour with her relaxing and sleeping in my arms. During the warmer summer months I would take her outside in the grass and clover. At first she would be afraid and get as close to me as she could but after a while she would go a little further away to lie in the clover or to have a snack. But she never wandered far from me and I was always on guard for any stray dogs that may harm her and be ready to grab her and run for the house (though that situation never arose). On sunny days I'd make sure that I was near her to give her a shadow for some shade and only stay for maybe 5-10 minutes so that she wouldn't get over heated. I would also take her out on the patio with me in the shade when I'd go out.
She was my little buddy that was always there for me and would sometimes follow me around in the house like when I'd sit on the sofa she'd tried to jump up with me or follow me over the stairs and seeing her do this I'd take her along with me. Her favorite treats included dandelion and clover and when the first lot of dandelion would appear for the season I would pick some for her and she couldn't wait to get it and put her paws near the top of her cage to take it from my hands. I could always tell when she was happy, annoyed or mad. When she was happy she'd squeek. When she was annoyed she would screw up her face on one side. When she was mad she would dig with her paws. For example, if she didn't want to go into her cage she'd go to the back of her cage and dig up all of her litter all over the bottom of it.
Yesterday she was found in her cage on her side with her eyes closed and her mouth open. She was immediately taken to the vet where the vet said that she wasn't going to make it. So now Bunny is up in bunny heaven, playing with all the other bunnies and eating clover and dandelion. She was the first rabbit that I ever cared for and my son and I miss her terribly. She took a hold of my heart and we will always remember her. Play well, my little buddy and remember that I will always love you.
