My girl
by Anne Jurchak
Maggie, my girl, you had to go, where you are, I'd love to know. I see and hear you everywhere, and my heart can hardly bear.
At first, unsure when you came home, but your perfect sweetness soon had shone. Always ready for snuggles, walks, and treats, welcoming strangers with hugs at their feet.
You raised your brothers to love and be gentle, looked for them with disappointment whenever they left. Always welcomed me home with furious excitement, whimpering, tail wagging, and dancing for your mama.
You loved to be in bed with me, out in the grass, and hanging your head out the car window. The beach was your haven, where you'd run so free, fast as a bullet, filled with glee.
Every time you saw me, your delight would show, a joy in your eyes that would always glow. You let me maul you with kisses, always so sweet, never angry or annoyed, your patience a treat.
You relented to whatever your family needed, with a loving heart that never receded. Everyone that met you fell in love, Maggie, with many names: Cinder, Presh, Sissy, Rissy, and Dararitz
You loved being on the porch, watching the world go by, basking in the sun, under the sky. Yet, it broke my heart to see you age, slow down, and quietly disengage.
Your steps grew slower, your eyes less bright, but your spirit fought on with all its might. The pain of watching you decline, would became a shadow of your former shine.
But now, I hope you're running free, in heaven's fields, no pain, just peace. Maggie, my girl, your spirit is near, in every whisper of wind, I hear.
Though you're gone, your love remains, forever in my heart, in joy and in pain.
Mama
