Our last days together
by Ashley Neal
I haven't been feeling good for a while. I've been going to that place with the slippery benches, other dogs and people wearing doctors clothes more than I like. I have some new food that isn't that good, but Daddy cooks me chicken to mix in with it and it tastes better that way. Most days I only eat some of it but it's honestly because I don't really feel hungry anymore.

I like to sleep a lot. Mommy and Daddy leave most days and when they aren't here I dream about them and all of my friends. I always feel better when they are around. I get to see my sister Caycie every once in a while. I don't know where she goes for so many days in a row, but when she is here she is very sweet to me. When I met her she was very tiny and now she is bigger than me.

On one of the days where Mommy and Daddy stay home with me most of the day, I had an accident. I was bleeding and I didn't have a cut. I was pretty embarrassed but they said it was OK. I went with them to a place I kinda remember being at before. The people there were wearing doctor clothes too. That place made me nervous, but the people were nice. One nice lady in doctor clothes took me to a room where I laid down on a table and I heard a few beeping sounds. I was feeling ok, but anxious to see my parents again.

I did see them again, but they seemed sad. My daddy had red eyes and a scrunched up face and I didn't know why. I had a slumber party that night with some other dogs at that place. I had a good time but I missed my bed. I love my bed. I actually have two beds. My favorite bed is by the TV and the big window. I lay there everyday, watching squirrels eat nuts, lizards run by and people drive by in their cars.

My daddy picked me up in the morning and we went home. I am tired today, but glad to be in my favorite bed. Mommy wasn't there. I'm not sure what day it was but I'm guessing it was one of those days where she puts on pretty clothes and leaves for a while. Daddy usually leaves for a long time too but he is here with me today, on his computer. Daddy is sad today, but I am being strong for him. He gave me some peanut butter in my bowl a few times today. That was the best part of my day.

Mommy came home and I was waiting for her at the door. She seemed sad again today. She loves me a lot. I wondered if she was sad because I had an accident and went to that place? She told me I was a good girl and took me outside. Most days Mommy takes me outside and I like to chase lizards and run by the water, but today I am too tired to run.

The next day I was tired again and not feeling like myself. Mommy left again and Daddy was on his computer again for a while but it's OK, because I just want to take a nap. I got a peanut butter snack after my nap again today. Mommy came home and took a lot of pictures of me. She is definitely sad. I am definitely tired.

I went for a walk with Mommy and Daddy tonight and after I had a steak dinner! Wow. It was so good. I hadn't had a steak dinner since my birthday a year ago. It was so yummy. Later Mommy gave me a piece of round shaped cake with some pretty sugary stuff on top. I think she called it a cupcake. It must be my birthday again. Mommy and Daddy cried again today and I wanted to tell them I was ok, but I didn't feel ok. I snuggled with Mommy before I went to bed.

Did I mention that I get to sleep in bed with Mommy and Daddy? They have a big bed and I usually snuggle up next to Daddy. He is my favorite person. He makes me feel so safe and special. Most days Daddy and I go to bed together and he tells me what a good girl I am. I hope he knows I love him.

The next day Mommy and Daddy were both home with me all day long. We spent some time outside and we saw some of my friends. Mommy and Daddy were very sad today and Mommy was taking lots of pictures of me again. We went for a ride later in Daddy's truck and I think that was the best part of the day. Well, there was another steak dinner and more cupcake for dessert, so maybe that was the best part of the day. I'm not sure. It's a pretty close tie.

Grandma came by for a visit and she was sad too. I was still tired again so I took another nap. When I woke up we all went on a walk together and I got pretty embarrassed because I went potty on leg. That hadn't ever happened before. I have been having a hard time going potty. Daddy and Mommy got upset. They told me I was a good girl and we went home and I rested for a little while.

A little later a nice lady I have never met before came by to visit. She sat with me on the couch and talked with Mommy, Daddy and Grandma. Daddy and Mommy started crying and I was so tired. The pinch that I felt stung a little, but Daddy let me snuggle up next to him so I felt better soon. I heard the nice lady say there was medicine in the pinch. Mommy sat down in front of me and for the first time ever I let her kiss me square on the mouth. She always tries to kiss me there. I saw her smile and laugh and I faintly heard her say something, but I was really, really tired now. I felt so relaxed there with my family and i was feeling no pain after that pinch.

The nice lady that was talking with my family put a little bracelet on my arm and gave me some more medicine. Right then I saw all of my friends. They were all smiling and telling me what a good girl I had been. I felt so happy and also very tired. I saw my Mommy, Daddy and Grandma one last time. I heard them crying and I wanted to give them a kiss, but my body wasn't working anymore. I love them so much. I hope they know that.

I have to go now. My friends are waiting for me at the foot of the bridge. Look how beautiful it is. Can you see it, Daddy? Mommy, take a picture! It is made of a rainbow. I will see you again, Mommy. I will see you again, Daddy. Grandma, tell Libby I'll be waiting for her past the rainbow. Please tell Caycie I love her too. I had the best life with you. I will never forget the times we spent together. They were the best times of my life.
