Quietly at night
She would come to my bed
Hoping to be stroked
On the side of her head
And then, just as quickly
She'd be gone on her own
Happy to observe
As she sat on the lawn
She would sit by a hearth
Or on a window sill
With a soulful look
Ever so still
With her paws on my shoulder
And her face next to mine
She would purr very softly
And all would be fine
She could sit on my lap
For a moment or two
or take a long nap
With nothing to do
Her courage was strong
As she fought to stay well
She knew what she wanted
You always could tell.
When Sassy went home
She left us in peace
Knowing our love
Will never decrease
Her presence is felt
Even as we cry
We'll see her again
At our final sigh
But, for now there is joy
Having known her so long
And gratitude flows
Like a sweet gentle song
